Over 90% of sexually abused children were abused by someone they knew.
Domestic abuse will affect 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in their lifetime.
Approximately 85,000 women and 12,000 men are raped in England and Wales every year; that’s roughly 11 rapes (of adults alone) every hour.

25% of people in the LGBT+ community will experience violent or threatening relationships.

You do not need to feel alone. Help is out there.
The one-to-one counselling offered by ROTHACS can make a big difference – our clients tell us so!

It is no exaggeration to say that the work of ROTHACS is both life changing and indeed lifesaving – Rotherham MP Sarah Champion

Counselling Referrals

Rothacs only accepts self-referrals for our adult counselling service. This means that the referral form must be completed by the person seeking support. We understand that some people may need help from a trusted professional, family member, or friend to complete the form, and they are welcome to provide that support. However, the referral must come from the individual themselves. We are unable to accept referrals submitted by third parties on someone else’s behalf.

The only Rothacs services that continue to accept new third-party referrals are:

  • Counselling for young people aged 18 and under
  • Clients referred through the Trauma Resilience Service referral pathway

Preparing for Counselling

Once we receive your referral, you will be added to our waiting list for a telephone assessment. We will contact you as soon as an appointment becomes available. During your telephone assessment, a member of our counselling team will take the time to understand your needs, answer any questions you may have, and ensure that our service is the right support for you at this time.

Following your telephone assessment, you will be offered our pre-counselling service, designed to help you prepare for your counselling journey. Counselling can sometimes bring up difficult thoughts and emotions, and pre-counselling provides practical tools and support to help you feel more prepared.

When you self-refer, you will be offered one of the following options:

Pre-Therapy Course

Our six-week pre-therapy course includes weekly two-hour group sessions. During the course, you will learn practical strategies to help you manage the effects of trauma.

It includes:

  • Grounding techniques
  • How we process trauma
  • Anxiety management
  • Preparation for therapy

Or

Recovery at Rothacs

Recovery at Rothacs is an online programme developed by a survivor of sexual violence, for survivors. The programme offers practical information, guidance, and coping strategies to help you regain a sense of control and build resilience.

It includes:

  • Three learning modules
  • Five lessons within each module
  • Video, audio, and written versions of every lesson
  • A downloadable workbook for each module to support reflection and learning at your own pace

What Happens Next?

Once you have completed your pre-counselling programme, you will be placed on the waiting list for counselling. We will contact you as soon as an appointment becomes available.
