About ROTHACS

Our skilled and trained counsellors adhere to the ethical standards of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Our Mission is to help survivors of sexual, physical or emotional abuse and domestic violence (living or working in Rotherham) to fulfil their potential and lead happier, healthier lives. 

• We support survivors to understand the effects of their abuse on their emotional, mental and physical wellbeing, and increase their knowledge and skills so they can develop positive coping strategies to deal with their symptoms of abuse, including becoming more engaged with society.
• We aim to improve survivors’ awareness and access to other support agencies and information appropriate to their needs.
• We aim to improve working relationships with other agencies and statutory bodies to raise awareness of client needs and ensure services for victims are understood and appropriately resourced. 
• We provide specialist therapeutic counselling support on a one-to-one and group basis.
• We run a women’s and men’s therapy group and offer a drop in. We also offer a pre-therapy course. 
• We provide an ISVA (independent sexual violence advocacy) service . 
• We lobby and engage with other services.

Our Values

Freedom – We believe freedom from abuse and violence is a fundamental right and we will help people overcome trauma caused by abusive perpetrators.

Safe and secure environment – We understand feeling safe has a positive effect on emotional wellbeing and mental health. We will provide an environment to enable this. 

Non Judgemental – We do not make judgements about how people, look, act or think things that may be different from ourselves. We accept, understand and celebrate individuality.

Respecting Choices – We understand and accept that people need to be able to make their own choices that are right for them and whether or not we agree, we will always respect that choice. 

Genuineness – The foundations for building genuine relationships with yourself and others is honesty and sincerity. We will be true to ourselves and each other.

Specific Aims

• Support clients to understand the effects of abuse on their mental and physical wellbeing, increase their knowledge and skills so they can develop positive coping strategies to deal with their symptoms of abuse including becoming more engaged with society.
• Improve clients’ awareness and access to other support agencies and information appropriate to their needs.
• Improve working relationships with other agencies and statutory bodies to raise awareness of clients’ needs and ensure services for victims/survivors are understood and appropriately resourced.

Objectives

• Provide specialist therapeutic counselling support (one-to-one and group)
• Run a range of other support groups (for example drop-in and Men’s group)
• Provide an ISVA (independent sexual violence advocacy) service

Accreditations

• Our service is an accredited member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy). We abide by the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions (2018). All of our staff members are appropriately trained and undertake continuous professional development.
• Rotherham Abuse Counselling Service is a member of  The Survivors Trust a national umbrella agency for over 130 specialist rape, sexual violence and childhood sexual abuse support organisations.
• The ISVA service is accredited by Lime culture.
